You Can Bank on the Swiss

Congratulations to Swiss all-rounder Fabian Cancellara on his convincing win in the 2010 Tour of Flanders. The 14 people in the U.S. who watched the tape delay of the race on the Versus cable channel were treated to some classic race action including the spectacle of professional road cyclists walking their bikes up cobbled hills. Late in the race Cancellara and three-time winner and Belgian favorite Tom Boonen were locked tete a tete until Cancellera put in a tremendous acceleration on the steepest part of the Kapelmuur, dropping Boonen and opening a huge gap in short order. Then it became a matter of, as commentators Liggett and Sherwin had it, “Chasing the World and Olympic time-trial champion to the finish.”  A very tall order, and one that none of the other cyclists could fill. Great stuff.
