Annus Terminus

As the first year of this blog comes to a close, I’d like to thank all those who took the time to read my posts and especially those who took the time to comment on the material. It’s nice to know that my efforts aren’t just disappearing into the aether. The knowledge that people are reading my material spurs me to improve my writing and check my assumptions. Thank you.

I started this blog as a forum for my thoughts and to practice my writing and essay skills, and it’s pretty much worked out. My writing has improved. The biggest surprise has been the times I would have an idea for a post and the initial research would show that my assumptions or conclusions didn’t fit the facts. So I have learned and in some cases had to change my mind, and that’s good.

Before I started this blog I read several articles on blogging and how to build audience. I’ve ignored those guidelines. It is not the purpose of this blog to serve as a portal for other people’s businesses. Regular readers know what I think about that. If people like what I write, they’ll read me. If they don’t, that’s fine too. If I’m going to advertise for anyone, it’s going to be me (links on the right under Schwag).

I’ve been a little surprised at the posts that proved the most popular. Because I don’t write with SEO or popular culture in mind, I have to think that certain posts are popular because they resonate in some way with the readers. Throwing out hits for the Home and About pages, the ten most popular posts for 2010 were:

When I started this blog the first week of the year, I didn’t have any expectations for the number of posts that might be generated. Because of the nature of the blog, and the fact that I’m not paid to do this, I knew I wouldn’t be generating daily content, but I didn’t want to go weeks between posts, either. This is post 186 on the year, and fair to say I didn’t expect to reach that level. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading as much as I’ve enjoyed writing. I’m looking forward to next year.

Happy New Year!
